Auspicious greetings! Phuoc Hue Buddhist Temple of San Antonio would like to introduce our Chanting Book Series! Currently, along with our General Chant Book, we have included ten additional chant books. These beautiful, stand-alone chant books are meant to be an easy, convenient, and light means of taking your practice wherever you go. We hope to continue to add more chant books to the series in the future. For now, the series includes: The Morning & Evening Chanting, The Diamond Sutra, The Amitabha Sutra, The Medicine Buddha Sutra, The Aspirations of Samantabhadra Sutra, The Ullambana Sutras, The Repentance & Five Precepts Recitation Ceremonies, Sutras on Metta, Happiness, and Karma, and the Universal Gateway chapter of the Lotus Sutra.
The Morning & Evening Chant Book is what we and most Mahayana traditions use for morning and evening chanting. Most Mahayana traditions chant the Shurangama Mantras for morning service and the Amitabha Sutra for the evening service.
The Lotus Sutra is one of the most revered sutras in Mahayana Buddhism. The 25th chapter, The Universal Gateway of the Bodhisattva Perceiver of the World’s Sounds, is often printed and used as its own sutra for chanting.
The Amitabha Sutra is one of the most well known and chanted sutras in most Mahayana Buddhism traditions. It is one of the three main sutras of the Pure Land School and is often chanted for evening services and funerals in other traditions.
The Chant Book contains four important sutras on Metta (loving-kindness), Happiness, and Karma: Metta Sutta, Mangala Sutta, Sutra of the Buddha speaks of Changes to Come, and the Cause and Effect Sutra.
This chant book contains the full Repentance and Five Precepts Recitation Ceremony. Intended for those who have already taken the Three Refuges and Five Precepts, however, anyone can use and recite these.
The Diamond Sutra (skt. Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā Sutra) is one of the most important, influential, and oldest Mahayana sutras and is admired and chanted in almost every Mahayana tradition.
The Medicine Buddha Sutra chant book. This sutra is an important sutra in Mahayana Buddhism depicting the Buddha as a spiritual physician.
The Ullambana Sutras chant book contains two of the main Ullambana sutras: The Buddha Speaks the Ullambana Sutra and the Filial Piety Sutra (The Buddha Speaks about the Deep Kindness of Parents and the Difficulty of Repaying it).
The Aspirations of Samantabhadra Sutra is a beautiful sutra to chant for strengthening your spiritual vows and repentance. Often chanted before or on important occasions.
The Three Pure Land Sutras are the three main sutras of the Pure Land Tradition. The chant book includes The Sutra on the Buddha of Infinite Life (the Longer Amitabha Sutra), the Buddha Pronounces the Sutra of Amitabha Buddha (the Shorter Amitabha Sutra), and The Sutra on the Visualization of the Buddha of Infinite Life.
The Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva Pūrvapraṇidhāna Sūtra (Sanskrit, Sutra of the Fundamental Vows of the Bodhisattva Kṣitigarbha) or Kṣitigarbhasūtra is a Mahāyāna sūtra teaching about the bodhisattva Kṣitigarbha and is one of the more popular sūtras in Chinese Buddhism. The sutra tells of how Kṣitigarbha became a bodhisattva by making great vows to rescue other sentient beings and a description of how he displayed filial piety in his past lifetimes. The sutra also expounds at length the retributions of unwholesome karma, descriptions of Buddhist hells and the benefits of good merit both great and small.
The Lotus Sutra: Chant Book. The Lotus Sutra is one of the most important and influential Mahayana sutras and is the main sutra of the temple’s tradition, Tiantai. This chant book of the Lotus Sutra’s 28 chapters are compiled in a “cliffs notes” version, divided out into 8 sections.
