Join us for a one-day retreat honoring the Eight Precepts and spend the day in the life of a monk or nun. This retreat will start promptly at 6:00AM until 6:00PM, so please arrive 20-30 minutes early to check-in. This will be an electronics-free retreat.
During the retreat we will have Dharma talks, chanting, meditation, and a few chores to do. These training rules (the 8 precepts) are observed by laypeople during periods of intensive meditation practice and retreats of one day or longer. The Buddha encouraged his lay-followers to keep the Five Precepts (abstaining from killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, and taking intoxicants) for as long as life lasts. He also recommended that they follow some additional precepts as often as possible.
These are known as the Uposatha Precepts, or simply the Eight Precepts. They are traditionally observed on the full-moon days (uposatha), but they can be taken at any time.Following these extra precepts gives us the opportunity to practice some of the renunciation that monks and nuns follow every day. The precept on abstaining from sexual misconduct is changed to abstaining from any kind of sexual activity at all. Please join us for this enlightening experience and experience the life of a Buddhist monk or nun for a day.
Please be prepared to be electronics-free for the entirety of the retreat. Vegetarian breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be provided.
